When Portland cement concrete is used in concrete pressure pipe, it is combined with steel reinforcement in a way that employs the best properties of both materials. The concrete provides natural corrosion protection to the steel and its high compressive strength provides the rigidity to carry the external loads.

Each type of concrete pressure pipe is custom-designed. The allowable stresses and design procedures provided will depend upon the type of pipe and its application. The design procedures for all types of concrete pressure pipe take into account combinations of earth load, live load, impact, internal pressure, water hammer and axial loading.
